Permanent Makeup FAQ Ventura

What is Permanent Makeup?

Our Permanent cosmetic makeup is cosmetic tattooing. The specialized techniques used for permanent cosmetics are often referred to as “micropigmentation”, “micropigment implantation” or “dermagraphics”. The cosmetic implantation technique deposits colored pigment into the upper reticular layer of the dermis.

Is Permanent Makeup Really Permanent?

The word Permanent makeup, a misnomer, refers to the fact that the daily application of makeup is no longer required.  The pigments are not permanent, but rather last anywhere from 1 – 5 years.  Duration is dependent on the hand tool or machine used, pigment brand, skin, life style and quality of after care.  The equipment is manual (microblade or Softap) or reciprocating rotary.

Lifestyle refers to the amount of sun exposure, use of chemical peels or other exfoliants like Retin A (specifically Retin A .05% on prescription), whether sun protection creams are used and iron deficiency.

Am I A Candidate For Permanent Makeup?

For those who meet minimum age requirements and have the ability to heal properly from minor wounds can benefit from the liberating benefits of permanent cosmetics. Interest in this service spans the young to the more mature; those who desire a soft, natural enhancement to their appearance. It is especially  valuable to people who can’t wear traditional cosmetics due to allergies and skin sensitivities; active people who want to look their best for sports activities such as swimming, hiking, biking, tennis, aerobics; and those who don’t want to worry about “sweating off” or reapplying cosmetics. Permanent Cosmetics also benefits the vision challenged who have difficulty applying their cosmetics; and others with dexterity related conditions  such as arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke survivors, and busy people who don’t have time to spend applying and refreshing makeup throughout the day and evening.

How Long Will It Take?

The initial procedure generally takes approximately 2 hours. During this time, we establish client records, take reference photos, discuss the desired design and color, perform the procedure, and review aftercare instructions. Follow-up or color refresher sessions typically require less time—closer to 45–60 minutes.

Creating brows, bold eyeliner or full lip shading, areola pigmentation, scar camouflage or scalp enhancement can sometimes be a two stage process. This includes a consultation and initial procedure followed by a perfecting session 6–12 weeks later, if needed.

Proper aftercare and attention to the treated area significantly reduce the chances of needing additional sessions. Occasionally, full lip procedures or scar camouflage treatments may require two touch-ups. The first touch-up is $50, and the second is $135.

To protect their investment, clients are encouraged to refresh the color every couple of years.

Will It Hurt?

Most people experience some minor discomfort. Pain tolerance varies by individual, and some may feel more sensitivity than others. To minimize discomfort, we offer a range of methods including industry-specific topical anesthetics.

Sensitivity to discomfort is often heightened during menstruation or due to lack of sleep so clients are encouraged to book their appointment with the foregoing in mind.  For client comfort, a topical numbing cream is applied prior to and during the procedure.

Some individuals take Tylenol prior to the appointment to relax them.

Is Permanent Makeup Safe?

If proper sterilization and disinfection guidelines are met, permanent cosmetics should be completely safe. These guidelines include, but are not limited to the following.

IMPORTANT Things To Look For:

  • Each client should be treated with new, sterile needles, and these should always be opened in your presence to ensure safety and cleanliness.
  • Before beginning the procedure, the artist must use disposable, sterilized, one-time-use machine parts, which are discarded immediately afterward in a sharps container.
  • It’s important that personal protective equipment—like single-use gloves and aprons—be fresh for every client, and changed as needed during the procedure.
  • The technician should maintain a clean and professional appearance throughout the process.
  • Fresh, single-use coverings should be placed on treatment chairs or beds for every new appointment.
  • All procedures should be performed in a clean, dedicated treatment area, away from contaminants like nail dust, aerosols, or chemical fumes.
